Pandemics, perseverance, and paycheck protection—just a few words that have shaped and defined 2020. It's no secret that business owners across the Hudson Valley have faced their share of obstacles this year. Over the last two months, local businesses have submitted their tales of triumph and strength. Here are the 2020 Business Survival Story Contest grant winners.
We had some really great finalists to choose from – and we congratulate all who made the effort to share their stories with us!
$2,500 Grant Winner
Unshattered, Hopewell Junction, NY
By employing women in recovery who have broken free from the chains of addiction, Unshattered has helped create artisans. Each one handcrafts premium, sustainable handbags from fabrics and materials that would otherwise be headed to a landfill. Like many businesses, Unshattered was hit with a wave of uncertainty as the COVID crisis caused a statewide shutdown. This is their “Business Survival Story.”
$1,000 Grant Winner
Stringendo, Wappingers Falls, NY
Established in 1999, Stringendo serves string students aged 8 to 18 in the Hudson Valley by offering the opportunity to join their orchestra program, which includes seven orchestras, a traditional (fiddle) music program, a private lesson program, and a summer day camp. COVID-19 hit them hard financially, with the loss of their Summer Strings camp, Gala concert fundraiser, and spring concerts. These events fund their operations, allowing them to keep tuition extremely affordable, as well as provide scholarships to students in need. This is their “Business Survival Story.”
